Hogsback Farm

“People just come,” admits Amy Bogaard, owner with her husband, Joseph, of Hogsback Farm, which offers a weekly subscription service for Vashon residents and today has beans, greens, carrots and berries in the stand. “We don’t even see ’em. We put food in the farm stand, it disappears and there is money in the box.”

Hang out at their self-serve farm stand long enough, though, and the elusive food buyers appear.

Risa Stahl, a Hogsback CSA (community-supported agriculture) member for six years, on and off, prefers going to a farm stand or farmers market over visiting the grocery store. Today, her kids are antsy in the back of the minivan, so she hands them fresh-picked broccoli and carrots to munch on.

“My kids snack on broccoli,” says Stahl, laughing. “Anything that grows out of the earth they will eat.”
